Home Food Preservation: Tomatoes & Salsa Workshop
Do you have a bumper crop of tomatoes this year and want to enjoy them all year long? Do you want to learn how to make salsa? Canning is one method of food preservation that allows you to enjoy garden tomatoes all year round. While this method of home food preservation has existed for centuries, we have learned a lot about the science behind the practice in recent years
Penn State Extension in Cumberland County is offering the workshop “Home Food Preservation: Tomatoes & Salsa” on Thursday, October 4, 2018, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Cumberland County Service Center, 310 Allen Road, Carlisle. This workshop will explain the scientific reasoning behind today's recommended methods for making and processing tomatoes and salsa, including the basics of water bath and atmospheric steam canning for processing tomatoes and tomato products. We will also discuss the latest canning recommendations related to acidifying tomato products, the use of research tested recipes in canning salsa and other tomato products for safety and provide some recipes for fruit salsas.
Instructors for the workshop are Nancy Routch, Extension Educator and Jo’Ann Godshall, Penn State Master Food Preserver Volunteer. The registration fee is $15. The University of Georgia Extension book “So Easy to Preserve” can also be purchased for $20 at the time of registration. Call Penn State Extension at 240-6500 with questions about the workshop.
