‘The Nutcracker’ Marches into Central Pennsylvania!
Carlisle, Pa. (November 13, 2018) – The same dancing that takes the stage of the Lincoln Center in NYC comes to a venue near you! Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) brings the famed George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® to Whitaker Center on Dec. 15 and 16 and Hershey Theatre on Dec. 22 and 23.
The brilliant dancers of Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet bring Balanchine’s winter classic to life with larger-than-life sets and costumes set to the magical music of Tchaikovsky. As the clock strikes twelve, you’ll happen upon a battle between toy soldiers and mischievous mice as a blizzard of ballerinas reveal a wonderful world of confection.
Darla Hoover, CPYB associate artistic director and George Balanchine Trust répétiteur, explains how CPYB received the honor to perform this prized version of ‘The Nutcracker.’ “To produce a George Balanchine work, The George Balanchine Trust must provide license. Approval is based on the ability of a dance company to uphold Balanchine’s high artistic standards. CPYB has been the only school with license to perform this version of ‘The Nutcracker’ since 1991.”
With two casts, 175 students will have the chance to perform in this year’s ballet. We are grateful that so many families have made our Nutcracker their continued holiday tradition,” says Nicholas Ade, CPYB CEO. “We’re sure this professionally produced production will be a true pleasure for audiences! It is also a unique opportunity for our students to dance Balanchine. A large number of our alumni go on to dance roles from this performance professionally in their careers.”
The elaborate stage elements unleash imaginations – a Christmas tree grows to staggeromg heights; falling snow gives goose bumps; Mother Ginger provides comedic interludes and the Sugar Plum Fairy make hearts flutter! Maestro Stuart Malina will lead the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra’s live performances of Tchaikovsky’s richly colorful score at all three Hershey Theatre performances.
Mowery, Marjie and Don Mowery, is the co-presenting sponsor of ‘The Nutcracker.’
