Celebrate creativity, culture, and community this Juneteenth season through a powerful, hands-on painting experience centered on freedom, identity, and expression. In partnership with Hope Station, this collaborative workshop invites participants of all skill levels to explore personal storytelling through color, memory, and artmaking in a welcoming and reflective environment at Carlisle Arts Learning Center.
Led by teaching artist, Keziah Landis, Blue As I Am Black explores the rich relationship between the color blue and the concept of Blackness across history, culture, and artistic expression. Participants will begin with a brief visual presentation highlighting the symbolism and significance of blue through multiple creative mediums and cultural references. From there, participants will create their own original painting using varying shades of blue — and touches of yellow — to illustrate a meaningful moment, memory, or feeling from their lives.
Rather than focusing on literal or stereotypical representations of sadness, this workshop encourages participants to consider blue as expansive, layered, spiritual, joyful, protective, reflective, and deeply human. Come paint, connect, and commemorate Juneteenth through creativity and community.
