BBBSCR Celebrates Big Brothers Big Sisters Month

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region celebrates the 120th anniversary of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America during BBBS Month
BBBS of the Capital Region leads a community-wide initiative this September to impact youth through the power of mentorship.

Harrisburg, PA (September 3, 2024) – Every September, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) recognizes the impact of its programming, mentorship and matches during Big Brothers Big Sisters month. 2024 is even more special as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America celebrates their 120th anniversary. With 20 million BBBS alumni worldwide, their stories make up the foundation of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ impact and longevity.

BBBSCR kicks off its commemoration by celebrating matches at every stage. The nonprofit is putting out a call for volunteers throughout their 7-county service area. The gap between mentorship and youth who need it most continues to widen due to perceived barriers of the time and expertise needed to become a mentor.

“In response to a rapid increase in demand for mentorship, we are growing our program service capacity,” says BBBSCR President & CEO Amy Rote. “Over the past year, we increased the number of youth served by 53%, and we are excited to announce that we are in the process of expanding our service area into York and Adams counties.”

Through the national “It Takes Little to Be Big” campaign, BBBSCR brings authenticity to the forefront with their mentoring matches. The organization is shifting perceptions of mentorship and redefining the little everyday moments that can make a big impact on the lives of young people—time already spent going to a movie, sharing a slice of pizza, and getting coffee.

BBBSCR will leverage their social media platforms throughout the month to engage BBBS alumni and supporters to highlight the mentorship moments that inspire potential and encourage volunteers to help bridge the gap between people and possibility.

For Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, BBBSCR invites the community to share their most pivotal mentorship moments, no matter how big or small, on all social media channels using the hashtag #BeBig and #BBBSMonth. This tapestry of stories will serve as a testament to the significant impact and universality of mentorship moments.
